86 cases of human rights violations against elderly in a year

KATHMANDU, Dec. 30: A report has revealed that 86 elderly people were victimized due to violation of their human rights in twelve months, owing to rising human rights violations and impunity in the country.



According to the Human Rights 2068 B.S Year Book prepared by Sankalpa Nepal—an NGO working in the field of human rights—with support from National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), 17 elderly people were murdered while six cases of rape related senior citizens were reported during the same period.[break]



A total of 86 senior citizens were made victims in 81 cases of human rights violation. Of them 45 are women while the rest are men.



The report states that 28 cases of tortures were reported on the charge of practicing witchcraft.



Most of the elderly people aged 60-65 were subjected human rights violation.



Similarly, western development region and eastern development region recorded the highest number of human rights violation— an equal number of 18.



Releasing the report, NHRC Chairman Kedarnath Upadhyay said that the rights body was working in the field to reduce the cases of human rights violation.



On the occasion, CPN (UML) leader Rajendra Prasad Pandey, Nepali Congress leader Shovakar Parajuli, NHRC member Ram Nagina Singh and others said that the senior citizens were subjected to human rights violation in our society also because of inclination to single family due to impact of rapid urbanization and westernization.



The population of senior citizen is around nine per cent in the country, according to the recent census.
