KATHMANDU, May 12: A Nepali teacher held on charges of insulting Islam was released from jail on Sunday, said Doha News quoting his friends. A former Qatar Academy chemistry teacher Dorje Gurung, who was fired last month over the controversial remarks he allegedly made to students, was set to fly to Nepal shortly thereafter.

But he was picked up on May 1 and held at the Al Rayyan police station for 10 days. In the five days since his arrest became public, an international campaign launched by friends, colleagues, students and others sought his release. And an online petition condemning his arrest has already garnered more than 12,500 responses.
