Data less on freshwater species: IUCN

KATHMANDU, Jan 14: A recent study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has found that 31.3 per cent of the total 1,073 freshwater species existing in the eastern Himalayan region are data deficient.



The study has stressed on the need for new extensive research. [break]



According to a press release received here Thursday, of those species for which information is available, 7.2% are classed as threatened and a further 5.4% are considered to be nearly threatened.



"Due to the rapid development of the region, it is essential that politicians, legislators and other stakeholders have access to information on the status of freshwater species and habitats so that they can incorporate this into their decision-making and planning processes," says David Allen, program officer, IUCN Species Program.
