KATHMANDU, Dec. 7: The Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) is preparing to carry out a study on slow progress on construction of the small and medium hydropower projects though the licenses for such projects were offered in abundance.

The Electricity Development Department had offered licenses to hundreds of promoters for electricity generation.[break]

Senior engineer at AEPC and community electrification programme manager Jagdish Kumar Khonju said that such study would be started from the current quarter of the current fiscal year.

Khonju told RSS, "We are starting the study to discourage the practice of only holding the licenses of the small and medium hydropower projects. This would reveal why the small projects were not developed."

The central coordination committee headed by secretary at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment is preparing the basis for study, it is learnt.

Khonju said that the donor agencies have pledged their supports to carry out the study and the issue has been included even in the budget of the current fiscal year.

The government is doling out the grant amount for the projects of up to 100 kilowatts.

According to the Department, a total of 785 applications have been filed seeking licenses for developing projects of less than one megawatt while around 500 applications have been lodged seeking a green signal for constructing hydro power projects up to 10 megawatts.

The Department has issued 202 licenses for developing hydroelectricity projects of less than one megawatt, for altogether 148 megawatts.

Similarly, over 150 firms have bagged licenses to build up to 10 megawatts of hydel projects.

Likewise, the AEPC has forwarded a proposal for building five mini grids across the country in a bid to properly utilize the power generated from the small and medium hydro power projects.
