The students opting for MD and MS studies accused the hospital authorities of conspiracing against them and locked by the examination hall. BPKIHS had received authority to run such bridge course examination from Nepal Medical Council (NMC). [break]
"Few hospital officers and department chiefs are to blame for this situation because they don´t want us to enroll for higher studies. We won´t back down unless we are given the right to sit for the examination," said a student.
As per the formal agreement between the medical institutes, BPKIHS had gained the privileges to operate bridge course entrance examinations in various medical subjects like anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, bio- chemistry, pharmacy medicine and general pathology.
According to Surendra Kumar Acharya, House Officer of the Dental Department, BPKHIS had decided to conduct examinations in anatomy, physiology, bio-Chemistry and pharmacy Medicine only.
In order to enroll the MD and MS, the students need to take six months of bridge course after passing the entrance examination.
"The BDS students were not shortlisted for the examinations because other students from MD and MBBS educational background have secured better mark than them," said Dr Hemantaraj Joshi of dental department.
Meanwhile, an officer of BPKIHS said the students will be enrolled through the criteria of the specific department. "Taking examination is not enough, what if the department teachers find the student incapable for the study," said the officer.
The problem came to the fore around a decade ago when the senate meeting allowed the BDS passed students to pursue MD and MS studies, informed the office.
For the BDS students to follow their post graduate study, completion of MDS is a must.
"Today there are many MBBS students and teachers opting for MD and MS study and the case is similar with the BDS passed students. Now BDS students should go for MDS study," said Dr Parash Pokharel Spokesperson for BPKHIS. “
"And for that we are taking BDS students for the bridge course examination under the recommendations of the department teachers," added Pokharel.
