5 more bodies of Ilam landslide victims found

ILAM, Oct 3: Two days after a massive landslide swept away 14 people on the Mechi Highway, a search team recovered five more dead bodies on Wednesday.



With this, the number of dead bodies retrieved after the Monday´s landslide has reached 11 dead. Six bodies had been found the same day the tragedy struck. [break]



According to police inspector Ganesh Banstola, the dead bodies have been identified as those of Mandira Pradhan of Samalbung VDC-1 in Ilam district, Padam Pradhan of the same village, Aarati Lama, Namgyal Bhotiya, Dawa Norbu Sherpa and Chhoden Bhotiya, all of whom are from India.



Earlier, four dead bodies had been identified as that of Sharan Pradhan and Ravi Gupta of Fikkal bazaar, Saroj Tamang of Taplejung and Chhiring Kesang Sherpa of India.



One dead person has not been identified as yet.



Meanwhile, Yangkila Sherpa of India, Aji Yolmu of Pashupatinagar and Suwa Prdhan of Ilam are still missing. Two of the five vehicles that were swept away in the landslide are also missing. The landslide had occurred on Sunday in the Harkate-Hanspokhari section of the highway.



Two more dead found in Sankhuwasabha landslide



Meanwhile, our Dharan based correspondent Rohit Rai reports that two more dead bodies have been recovered on Wednesday from the debris of a landslide in Dhupu VDC-8 in Sankhuwasabha district, taking the toll from the mishap to five.



According to Chandra Kant Neupane, Assistant Chief District Officer, the dead bodies have been identified as that of Krishna Ghimire, 45, and Dil Maya Rai,52. Both were from Dhupu-8 and had been missing along with two other family members after a landslide buried their house in Jyamire village of Sankhuwasabha district Monday night.



Among the deceased, Dil was the wife of Chakra Bahadur Rai, while Krishna was their neighbor who had stayed at their house on the night when the landslide had occurred. Bodies of Chakra, his daughter-in-law Usha and his 13 months old grandson Pratap were recovered on Tuesday.



Neupane informed that they are in the process of handing over the bodies to the victim families along with compensation money.



The injured, Som Bahadur Rai, 24, and Kamala Rai,12, both children of Chakra, are undergoing treatment at BPKIHS Dharan.



The details of actual damage to properties caused by the landslide are yet to be ascertained. According to Acting CDO Neupane, the complete details of the loss was difficult to obtain immediately as the affected places are hard to reach, though rescue teams from Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police are already at work in the affected area.
