PALPA, Jan 30: Even after four days of his wife´s murder allegedly by his own cousin, eyes of Gyan Bahadur Darjee, 55, of Humin in Palpa, are still tearful. Ailing with paralysis and asthma, Gyan Bahadur can not even move his body. His wife was the sole breadwinner and caretaker in his family.

With his wife Mankumari´s unexpected demise, Gyan Bahadur has stopped taking asthma medicines for the first time in the past three years. It is because neither does he have money to buy medicines nor can he get off the bed to go anywhere. Before his wife´s death, she used to help him take medicines. [break]

Mankumari was allegedly killed by Gyan Bahadur´s cousin Binod on Wednesday with a baton of firewood. Binod has run away from the village with Mankumari´s two tolas of gold.

“She was to buy medicines that day,” Gyan Bahadur told myrepublica.com. “Who will look after me, now? I was totally dependent on her.” Gyan has no children. He has three ropanis of land and a thatched hut.

Despite locals´ pressure on police to nab the killer, Binod still remains elusive. In the meantime, it is learnt that that police have sought assistance of former Maoist combatants cantoned in Arunkhola to track and nab Binod. According to locals, Binod is in touch with cantoned Maoists.

An Armed Police Force (APF) deserter, Binod himself had spent some time inside the Arunkhola cantonments as a former Maoist rebel. Though already married, Binod again married a female PLA member while in the camp. According to the police, he frequently visits the camp to meet his second wife. He has two sons from the first wife.

“On the ground that Binod was a former Maoist combatant and he is married to a female PLA member, we have sought help from the camp commanders,” a senior police officer said. “We hope they will assist.” DSP Pawan Giri said, adding that the police will not let Binod off under any circumstances. “We will definitely nab him,” he said.

However, Netra Pande, Nawalparasi secretary of the Maoists, ruled out Binod´s links with them. “I do not even know him,” Pande said. According to locals, Binod had been threatening them claiming to be a PLA man. A permanent resident of Tahu in Palpa, he mostly stays out of village.
