UML launches election-focused ‘Mission Jagaran’

KATHMANDU, June 14: The CPN UML has rolled out a nationwide Mission Jagaran campaign, assigning responsibilities to central committee members with the goal of rebuilding the party's support base and improving its performance in upcoming local and provincial elections.

The party has circulated a detailed 31-page concept paper reviewing past election results, reasons behind electoral setbacks and declining public confidence in the party. The document argues that voters who were encouraged by the 2017 left alliance and the formation of the former Nepal Communist Party became disillusioned after the alliance collapsed and the UML later split.


According to the document, some voters subsequently shifted their support to alternative political forces. It also claims that the rapid rise of the Rastriya Swatantra Party was linked to political instability and geopolitical influences.


The UML acknowledges that it failed to effectively communicate its achievements and those of governments it led. The document says this weakened public support and contributed to subsequent political developments.


Party publicity chief Niraj Acharya said the campaign document was prepared to help party leaders better understand the political context, reasons for electoral losses and the party's future direction before engaging with cadres and voters.


The party has also emphasized a stronger digital strategy, instructing cadres to increase their use of social media and pay greater attention to algorithm driven campaigning and perception management.


As part of efforts to reconnect with voters, UML has introduced a six-point outreach strategy focused on engaging directly with the public, listening to citizens' concerns, strengthening mass organizations, promoting the party's ideology and identifying capable leaders through public opinion assessments.


Every central committee member has been assigned responsibility for specific local units, while additional leaders have been deployed where necessary. The party has also established a monitoring mechanism to track whether assigned leaders are actively carrying out their duties.


According to Acharya, leaders deployed under the campaign have been encouraged to stay with local residents rather than in hotels to strengthen grassroots connections.


The Mission Jagaran campaign will continue until the next local and provincial elections.
