KATHMANDU, Feb 17: Opposition party CPN-UML obstructed parliament proceedings on Friday accusing the government of protecting those involved in murdering UML cadres at various places in Siraha, Solukhumbu and Bajhang districts.

UML demanded that the government form a high-level judicial probe committee to investigate into the killings and bring the culprits to book.[break]

“We will not allow the parliament to enter into regular businesses until the government forms a high-level judicial commission and brings the culprits to book,” UML Chief Whip Bhim Acharya announced during the parliament meeting on Friday.

Speaker Subas Nembang had to adjourn the House meeting following obstruction by the UML lawmakers.

Acharya said they were compelled to stall the House meeting as the prime minister and home minister didn’t listen to their repeated requests to arrest the culprits, take action against them and provide relief to the families of the victims.

According to him, a UML cadre Chhedi Yadav from Laxminiya VDC of Siraha district was murdered by slitting his throat three months ago.

He accused the local police and administration of hobnobbing with the criminals instead of nabbing them. Similarly, one Suresh Sah was killed in Belha VDC of Siraha district two months ago while fighting back a group of dacoits who looted the village.

Acharya argued that circumstantial evidences suggest police cooperation in the whole episode. Since then, locals have frequently taken to the streets demanding action against the culprits but the police, according to Acharya, would mercilessly beat up peaceful demonstrators.

UML also demanded action against those involved in the killing of a teacher, Bipin Bastola, in Necha Batase in Solukhumbu district.

“Locals say that he was brutally killed by slitting his throat by a group of around nine assailants but the local administration is trying to sweep the matter under the carpet and portray the killing as a suicide,” Acharya said.

He also accused the local administration of Bajhang of being reluctant to investigate killing of a UML cadre.
