"Forging a national consensus is the right way to ensure peace and promulgation of new constitution. The taskforce shall suggest a concrete proposal to realize the concept," CC member Ghanshyam Bhusal told Republica. Members of the seven-member taskforce are Mukunda Neupane, Pradip Gyawali, Bhim Rawal, Prakash Jwala, Urmila Aryal and Bishnu Rimal.
The meeting on Monday unanimously passed Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal´s political report after a weeklong deliberations. Khanal in his report emphasized the need for better cooperation and coordination between the party and the government. The deliberations saw CC members fiercely advocating for and against the government and party leadership.
The all-powerful CC is discussing the contents of the new constitution and the government performance. The party´s Constituent Assembly (CA) members are sharply divided on the system of governance and state restructuring models, among other important provisions to be incorporated in the new constitution. Some members have advocated for parliament-elected executive prime minister while other are lobbying for popularly-elected executive prime minister. Likewise, some UML lawmakers have voted in favor of a 14-province model passed by the majority of the CA State Restructuring Committee while other members have fiercely criticized the model terming it as ethnic-based.
Also the ongoing meeting is expected to make some changes in the roles and responsibilities of CC members and to discuss the reports submitted by several commissions formed by the party.
While addressing the meeting, Khanal had instructed the UML-headed government to seriously work to ensure security to the people, maintain law and order and bring about improvement in the prolonged economic crisis in the country.
