KATHMANDU, Feb 14: Swayambhu Yatayat did it again. A bus belonging to the company ran over roadside vendors in Chabahil area, leaving one killed and four seriously injured.

The deceased has been identified as Damar Kumari Nepali, 45, of Khotang. She died while being treated at the Intensive Care Unit at Om Hospital. The ill-fated woman had come out for buying vegetables, according to her kin. [break]

The four injured in the accident have been identified as Januka Majhi, 30, of Sindhuli; Rita Basyal, 32, of Palpa; Tara Tamang, 35, of Khotang and Madan Shrestha, 62, of Palpa. They are being treated in Om Hospital.

While Basyal has been admitted to ICU, the condition of three others is stable, according to hospital sources.

The overspeeding bus (Ba 2 Kha 593) had hit a push-cart on the roadside near Gopi Krishna Cinema Hall. This is the fifth fatal accident in a row involving the buses belonging to the ´infamous´ Swayambhu Yatayat at Chabahil area alone over the past six months.

A Swayambhu Yatayat bus had crushed three persons, including a school girl, to death on November 5, 2009, near Gopi Krishna Cinema Hall.

After the accident on Sunday, irate locals torched at least four buses belonging to the company in Chabahil area. According to the police, the driver of the bus has been absconding.

The agitating locals alleged that sheer negligence on the part of the company drivers was mainly to be blamed for repeated accidents in Chabahil area. They say the buses belonging to the company are always overspeeding and violating traffic rules quite often.

Situation at Chabahil remained tense till late evening following the protests from the locals. Vehicular movement along Chabahil-Sukedhara section of the Ring Road remained obstructed for hours after the 6 p.m. accident.

A large number of police personnel was mobilized in the ares to contain any untoward incident. Police lobbed several rounds of tear gas shells to contain the violent protesters.
