Gurung honored
KATHMANDU: Nepal Cycling Association President Chhimi Urkyen Gurung was honored by Asian Cycling Confederation (ACC) during its congress held on Monday in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Gurung was honored for successful ascent of Mount Everest with ACC and International Cycling Union (UCI) flag in 2011.
Gurung was honored by UCI President Pat McQuaid and ACC President Cho Hee Wook. Gurung was presented with token of appreciation for his feat.
NECOS chess kicks off
KATHMANDU: Nepal champion Badrilal Nepali, FM Manish Hamal, FM Bilam Lal Shrestha, Surbir Lama, Punyaman Karmacharya, Nabin Tandukar and Keshav Shrestha all started on a winning note in the NECOS Nationwide Rating Chess Tournament that kicked off on Monday.
Similarly, the other players to win their round one matches were U-19 champion Rupesh Jaiswal, Niraj Niraula, Madan Krishna Kayastha, Saurav Pradhan, Chudamani Rai, Rajendra Rai, Lekh Bahadur Thapa and Himal Lama.
Unrated player Rajendra Maharjan defeated veteran Sitaram Agrawal while Laxmi Prasad Kandangwa also emerged victorious.
The tournament carries the highest cash prize of Rs 240,000 in Nepali chess. The top three players of the tournament will bag a purse of Rs 50,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively. Altogether 152 players from 40 districts are participating in the event.
The tournament was inaugurated by CPN-UML General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel.
NCC lifts volleyball title
KATHMANDU: Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) on Monday lifted the title of GP Memorial Cup Nationwide Inter-campus Volleyball Tournament. NCC registered a hard-fought 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 25-22, 15-11 to stun host Shankar Dev Campus in the final. With the win NCC bagged Rs 50,000 while the host team received Rs 30,000. Public Youth Campus and Baneshwar Campus finished third and fourth respectively. The third and fourth place holders received Rs 20,000 and Rs 10, 000 respectively.
Host dominates Wilson Hoops
KATHMANDU: Host Wilson Academy A continued its dominance in the 12th Wilson Hoops with its second victory in as many matches. In the match played on Monday, Wilson A defeated RIBS 34-27 riding on 13 points from Man Bahadur Mijar. In other matches of the boys´ section, Angel´s Lord beat Wilson B 25-10 and KISC beat GEMS 37-13. In the senior girls´ category, Pennwood thrashed GEMS 33-11. In the junior boys´ section, HIMS edged past Alfas 27-24 while Maha Manjushree beat Gyanodaya 29-23.
Innovative, Opal into semis
KATHMANDU: Host Innovative and Opal on Monday booked their semifinal berths in the senior boys´ category of the Second Innovative Inter-school Basketball Tournament being held in the capital. Kathmandu English School and Neric Academy also advanced into the last four of the tournament. The host team beat Little Angels´ 47-30, Opal thrashed Gyan Niketan 60-35, Kathmandu English School overcame Gyanodaya 52-42 and Neric defeated CAB 51-40. In the junior boys´ category, Neric defeated defending champion New Shrine 29-11 to enter the semifinals. In the senior girls´ section, New Summit saw off host Innovative 23-18.
Kata seminar for judokas
KATHMANDU: Nepal Judo Association organized a kata seminar at the Central Judo Training Center of Dashrath Stadium on Monday. Altogether 27 judokas participated in a day-long seminar. The seminar was organized for the first time as part of preparations for the Sixth National Games. Judo assistant coach Rajesh Karmacharya conducted the seminar.
Gyan Niketan basketball from Tuesday
KATHMANDU: The 10th Gyan Niketan Inter-schol Basketball Tournament is kicking off at the school premises on Tuesday. The week-long tournament will feature altogether 31 teams -- 14 teams in senior boys´ category, 11 teams in junior boys´ category and six teams in girls´ section. The tournament will be played in league-cum-knockout format.
