SPORTS BRIEFS: Armyman Shahi wins Int'l marathon

KATHMANDU, April 1: Sergent Bikash Shahi of Nepal Army has secured first position in an international marathon held in Beirut, Lebanon on March 27.



Shahi, who is in a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, won the Cedar Green marathon 2011 organized by Inter-Lebanon Road Running and Athletics Club. [break]



He covered a distance of 42.195 km in 2 hours 40 minutes 40 seconds. Altogether 140 participants from seven countries, including the peacekeepers from Nepal, Indonesia, China, India, France and Spain; and the hosts Lebanon, had participated in the marathon. Indonesia and Lebanon finished second and third respectively.



Shahi bagged a purse of US$ 1500 and a trophy. He will also get an opportunity to participate in the Green Marathon to be held in Germany in the near future. Shahi´s trip to Germany will be sponsored by the Inter-Lebanon Road Running and Athletics Club.


Pragati, Samaj Kalyan near C division


KATHMANDU: Pragati Youth Club and Samaj Klayan Sports Centre are all set to get promoted to the C division after making it to the final of the Martyrs´ Memorial C Division qualifier on Friday. One among the two clubs will be promoted after the final match of group C which will be held at ANFA Complex, Satdobato on Saturday. Pragati defeated Jhamsikhel Youth Club 1-0 to advance into the final as Bikash Lama scored the decider. Meanwhile, Samaj Kalyan beat Church Boys United 4-2 in tiebreaker after the regular time ended in a goalless draw.



Balkumari clinch title


KATHMANDU: Balkumari College (Chitwan) won the final of Dil Bahadur Ramtel Memorial Running Cup Cricket Tournament on Friday. In the five overs reduced match, Balkumari beat Kantipur Hotel Management College by 22 runs at TU Cricket Ground, Kirtipur. Winning the toss, Balkumari opted to bat first and scored 110 runs losing four wickets. Naresh Giri scored 40 runs off 36 balls while Sagar Bhattarai scored 26 runs-a-ball. Rupesh Shrestha of Kantipur took two wickets in his three over spell conceding 13 runs.



Amrit Kumar Shrestha´s tight bowling helped Balkumari restrict Kantipur to 88 runs off 14.4 overs. Shrestha was later adjudged man-of-the-match. Subendu Pandey scored 32 runs off 21 balls but that was not enough for Kantipur to steer the game in their favor. Naresh Giri took two wickets in his 2.4 overs giving away 20 runs. With the win, Balkumari bagged a purse of Rs 50,000 while Kantipur had to settle for Rs 25,000. Abhishek Sapkota received Rs 3,000 as he was named man-of-the-series. Rahul Kunwar and Sapkota received Rs 1,000 each for being the best batsman and best bowler respectively.


Three Star into semis


DHANKUTA: Three Star Club fixed their semifinal spot in the Martyr Bhimnarayan Cup Football Tournament with a 3-1 win over Triyuga Sporting Club on Friday. Three Star bounced back from a goal down to beat Triyuga after Subarna Limbu scored the first goal to give his team the lead. Raj Kumar Ghising scored the equalizer for Three Star in the first half. After the break, Three Star played an attacking game which paid off well. Bikram Lama utilized a pass from Buddha Chemjong to put Three Star ahead. Chemjong scored the third goal to seal the match. Three Star will next meet Sagarmatha Youth Club from Morang on Saturday.


NEA claim seven gold


KATHMANDU: Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) clinched the team champions title winning seven gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals in the Public Enterprises Sports Tournament on Friday. Nepal Telecom settled for the second position and Nepal Television finished third. Janak Sikshya Samagri won the men´s volleyball title defeating the defending champions NEA. Udayapur Cement Factory defeated National Sports Council in the third place playoff.
