The Janasewa Sanskrit Higher Secondary School at Huwas Village Development Committee in southern belt of the Parbat district stopped running Sanskrit classes for lack of students studying the subject.[break]
The school had been teaching Sanskrit as a subject for 25 years but had to stop Sanskrit classes as the students started transferring to other schools being attracted by English.
Principal Tukalal Neupane said the number of students taking Sanskrit at the school has dwindled over the years as they feel that Sanskrit has less scope and it is also difficult to study other subjects for Sanskrit students.
“What’s the use of running Sanskrit classes when there are no students to teach,” Neupane said.
Social worker Giriraj Gautam said the number of students opting to study Sanskrit has decreased due to the wrong notion that it is the language only of the people of the Brahmins and Chhetri clans.
Locals say people started losing interest in Sanskrit education after the Maoists started burning Sanskrit scriptures and books and also physically attacking Sanskrit teachers and students during the time of the people’s war.
