BHADRAPUR, Dec 2: Chairman of the CPN UML Jhalanath Khanal has said the formation of a national consensus government has been difficult as the Nepali Congress could not nominate a common candidate for it.

Speaking at a press meet organised by the Press Chautari, Jhapa on Monday, UML Chairman Khanal claimed that his party should get an opportunity to lead a consensus government if the Congress failed to give a common candidate. [break]

"The nation could not get a way out to the existing crisis due to irresponsibility on the part of the UCPN (Maoist)", Khanal claimed.

Stating that constitutional vacuum in the country could be ended by carrying out necessary amendments to the constitution on the basis of national consensus, Khanal said vacant constitutional bodies would deepen the constitutional crisis and stressed the need of forging political consensus to prevent such a situation.

Also speaking at the programme, former speaker Subash Nembang underlined the need of finding a roadmap for holding fresh elections with the formation of a unity government.

Both leaders were on the way to Mangsebung, Ilam to attend the 59th birth anniversary celebrations of Kirant religious leader Atmananda Lingden.
