Besides serving the prison terms, they paid fines equal to two years´ salary before being released. Three cops, who have not paid the fines, are yet to be released. [break]
Following their release, the cops said they learnt about discipline and human rights during their imprisonment. “We are happy at the moment,” said Sub-inspector Trilok Chand, who still insists that the Nepal Police did them an injustice. “We just raised our voice against corruption,” he added.
Four other cops, who have been serving a seven year sentence in the same case, are in Dhangadhi jail. They said they plan to go to an appellate court, to be set up by Nepal Police, against the verdict of the Special Police Court.
The special court had convicted 45 cops for the alleged mutiny after they rebelled against senior police officers on July 12, 2008, reportedly in protest against financial irregularities at the battalion.
