CHARIKOT, Feb 21: Of late, more Tibetans are said to be illegally entering Nepal from Dolakha district to go Dharmashala in India to meet their religious leader, the Dalai Lama. According to the district police office, 31 Tibetans have been arrested for trying to cross the border in the past six months alone.

According to the police, illegal travelers enter Nepal from Lamabagar border point in Dolakha. The police claim that they often take help from locals to cross the border. [break]

Just Saturday, the police arrested four Tibetans (three women and one man) along with a local, Puskar KC, from Lamabagar, who helped them cross the border. KC, however, has said in his statement to the police that he was simply working as a porter for the Tibetans.

The arrested have been handed over to the Department of Immigration (DoI) in Kathmandu.

It takes four to five days for Tibetans to walk to Dolakha. Dolakha DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh said, “They walk for four-five days through the jungles to reach Dolakha. They usually get ill by the time they reach here.” Singh added, “We thus have to take them for health check-up before initiating investigations.”

Three VDCs in Dolakha -- Lamabagar, Alampu and Gaurishankhar -- border Tibet.
