The girl´s family, which was informed about the incident only two days later, suspects Adhikari might have forced the girl to undergo abortion at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) as she suffered vaginal bleeding after being discharged. [break]
The girl said Adhikari had forced himself on her for the first time about five months ago after returning home from a party with inspector Rajendra Thapa. She has not had periods for the past two months. “I told everything to his wife that night (April 24). I consumed poison after he swore by her and claimed it all happened unknowingly,” the girl said.
Adhikari, who is a father of two, started raping the girl after his wife delivered second child, the locals claimed. Locals said the police refused to lodge a complaint against Adhikari due his friendship with inspector Thapa. The case was registered on May 1 following intense public pressure.
The locals have been picketing the Mahendranagar Police Office for the past four days and even manhandled Rastriya Prajatantra Party leader Kalu Ram Chaudhary during an all-party meeting called at the police office Wednesday. Inspector Thapa, meanwhile, denied protecting Adhikari and said police was searching for him at the homes of relatives and other possible hide-outs.
The irate locals have also accused the president of a paralegal organization working for women´s rights, Indu Adhikari, of trying to save Ganesh, who happens to be her brother. “I haven´t hidden him anywhere. Our organization took up the matter immediately after learning about the accusal,” she said from the police station where she is staying for security.
Adhikari, who is also a member of a local all-party mechanism, is on the run.
