Addressing the gathering held on Thursday, Bangladeshi Ambassador to Nepal Shafiqur Rahman recalled the historic significance of the July Mass Uprising and paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives during the 36-day movement that led to the fall of what he described as an authoritarian regime.
He said the uprising reflected the people's long-standing grievances over discrimination, corruption, enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, denial of voting rights, repression and authoritarian rule. The ambassador particularly praised the role of young people and Generation Z students, describing them as the driving force behind the movement and a catalyst for Bangladesh's evolving socio-political landscape and democratic aspirations.
Expressing confidence in the enduring legacy of the movement, Ambassador Rahman said the spirit of the July Uprising would continue to inspire Bangladesh in its pursuit of peace, justice and inclusive development.
The ceremony began with Quran recitation and messages from Bangladesh's President and Prime Minister, followed by documentary screenings on the July Movement and special prayers for the martyrs. Pramod Jaiswal of NIICE, Dr. Foyasal Khan of Policy House, and Tanvir Ahmed Tarafder, director of the SAARC Secretariat, were among the speakers at the event.
