KATHMANDU, Feb 4: Nepali Congress President and Coordinator of the High Level Political Mechanism (HLPM) Girija Prasad Koirala on Thursday brushed aside rumors that the HLPM was conspiring to dislodge the current government.

During a meeting held at his residence in Maharajgunj, Koirala assured the prime minister that the mechanism was not formed to dissolve or form government. He also asked the prime minister not to be swayed by media reports and work without worrying about the fate of the government.

The meeting comes at a time when prime minister and his cabinet colleagues, including Deputy Prime Minister Bijaya Kumar Gachchhadar, have been expressing reservations about the HLPM. The prime minister skipped the last two meetings of the HLPM though he is the invitee member in the body.

Talking to media persons after the meeting that lasted over half-an-hour, the prime minister said Koirala asked him not to be carried away by media reports. “We also held discussion on recent media reports,” the prime minister said.

Stating that the media had tried to create an environment of mistrust, Koirala urged the prime minister to attend the HLPM meeting on a regular basis.

The duo also held discussion on the works of Special Committee on Supervision, Integration and Rehabilitation, peace process and drafting of the new constitution.

HLPM meeting put off till Saturday

The HLPM meeting scheduled for Thursday has been put off after the UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal expressed his inability to attend the meeting owing to party´s Standing Committee meeting.

According to NC Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel, the next HLPM meeting has been scheduled for Saturday. The parties are expected to take the crucial decision on determining the number of Maoists combatants to be integrated in the national army and other security agencies during the next meeting.
