Golden Gate sets up final with Lalitpur

KATHMANDU, June 25: Golden Gate College set up a final clash with Lalitpur District Chess Association in the Third Manamohan Memorial National Chess Championship on Tuesday.



Golden Gate defeated Machhindra Club 3.5-0.5 in the first semifinal while Lalitpur edged past Battisputali Club 2.5-1.5 in tie-breaker in the second semifinal.

Saurav Kherdekar defeated Shyam Shrestha and Surbir Lama to seal victory for Golden Gate while Niraj Niraula outclassed Bijay Dangol. Meanwhile, the match between Rajan Puri of Golden Gate and Madan Krishna Kayastha ended in a draw. [break]



In the second semifinal, the match was taken to tie-breaker after all the four boards ended in draws. Himal Lama of Battisputali defeated Badri Lal Nepali and played a draw with Rabindra Shakya in the tie-breaker but it was not enough to avoid defeat. Sajin Maharjan of Lalitpur beat Prakash Nepal of Battisputali while Ratna Byanjankar defeated Purushottam Chaulagain to seal the victory in the tie-breaker.

The final will be played on Wednesday. Altogether 17 teams had participated in the championship organized by Manamohan Memorial Chess Academy and Laliptur District Cooperative Association.
