Chief District Officer of the district Krishna Prasad Adhikari said VDCs like Gotamkot, Saylakhadi, Aathbiskot, Dadagaun, Ghelma, Sisne, Pipal, Jang, Rangshi, Kol, Hukam, Ranmamaikot, Takseraand Kakri VDCs have been declared insecure zones in view of the crises. [break]
Adhikari, who also heads the DFSN of Rukum said the VDCs were declared crises zones after a field visit by government appointed officers.
Adhikari said the network´s meeting held on Thursday has decided to take initiatives to deal with the imminent famine.
Some VDCs have already decided to demand food through village council meetings. Locals complained that foods have not yet reached in the village. The District Agriculture Development Office said that the decline in food production was caused by adverse weather conditions this year.
Kul Prasad Adhikari, senior agriculture development officer said that the maize crops have declined to 26 percent this year. Likewise, the production of paddy fell down to 18 percent.
Cases of malnutrition have also been reported in some children below five years of age in some VDCs.
The District Food Corporation said that it has only 1,550 quintals of rice in the store. Likewise, the food depot of Rukumkot VDC has only 80 quintals of rice. The district chief of corporation, Prem Narayan Chaudhary said that he had informed the center about limited storage.
