Top Maoist leaders had arrived in the district to inaugurate the district convention of the party.

The opposition party activists had frequently clashed with supporters of Maoist cadres and security personnel leaving at least 60 people injured.

Police had fired 36 tear gas shells and 10 bullets in the air to disperse the opposition activists. Opposition parties had also frequently attempted to disrupt the Maoist gathering but were not successful due to police intervention.
