The stocks in the go-down of Nepal Food Corporation (NFC) have already depleted, said Bhim Thapa, chief of NFC branch in Humla. Locals are facing an acute food shortage as winter crops are still not ready and summer crops have just been planted. The locals have no option other than to rely on subsidized rice, said Thapa. The government provides 10,000 quintals of rice for the district annually. Of this, 7,053 quintals of rice has already been distributed to the locals. “The remaining quantity is yet to be transported to the district,” said Thapa, adding, that NFC had demanded additional subsidized rice for the district.
The government has allotted 900 quintals of rice for the Shreenagar depot in southern Humla. But the government so far has only sent 150 quintals of rice has to the depot. The 900 quintals of rice already sent by the government to Sarkeghat depot hasn´t reached the place yet.
Locals have been forced to pay heftily for food items as NFC depots have run out of stock. According to NFC, 1,500 quintals of rice is consumed in the district.
Humla District Food Management Committee has demanded an additional 4,000 quintals of rice to meet the demand.
