KATHMANDU, May 6: The CPN-UML on Monday expressed strong concerns over the proposal of former chief secretary Lok Man Singh Karki as chief of the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA).

A day earlier, the Constitutional Council (CC) had recommended the name of the controversial former chief secretary as chief commissioner of CIAA. The High Level Political Committee (HLPC) had earlier proposed Karki´s name as chief of the anti-graft body. [break]

Karki is alleged to have tried to suppress the 2006 people’s movement and was declared by the Rayamajhi commission as ineligible for holding public office

In a press statement, the party said its politburo meeting today concluded that it is inappropriate to appoint a person who has ‘controversial image’ as chief of a sensitive body as CIAA and urged the president for reconsidering the proposal.

The party has further said it is optimistic that the state head would take step respecting the popular will in that matter as parliamentary hearing is impossible at present in the absence of legislature.
