SPORTS BRIEFS: Teresa into final

KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Teresa Academy advanced into the final of the 10th Gyan Niketan Inter School Basketball Tournament in the senior girls´ category on Saturday beating TIA 19-16 with seven points from Sabina Tamang.



In the junior boys´ section, Odyssey, VS Niketan, Awareness International Academy and Neric Academy advanced into the semifinals. In the senior boys´ category, Neric, Golden Peak, HIMS and Valley Public also made it to the semifinals. [break]





Wilson, Suvatara into final


KATHMANDU: Host Wilson Academy and Suvatara School advanced into the final of the 12th Wilson Hoops Inter School Basketball Tournament in the senior boys´ category on Saturday. Wilson edged past KISC 59-57 while Suvatara defeated Siddhartha Vanasthali 71-57.



SEBS into final


KATHMANDU: Samakhusi English Boarding School (SEBS) will lock horns with Newton in the final of the Third Angel´s Heart Sports Festival in the senior girls´ volleyball after winning their respective matches on Saturday. In the boys´ volleyball, Newton and Machhindra School registered wins.



Brihaspati, Arunima into semis


KATHMANDU: Host Brihaspati and Arunima entered the semifinals of the Second Brihaspati Running Shield Inter School Girls´ Football Tournament on Saturday. The host defeated Nandi Ratri 2-0 and Little Angel´s 3-0 for the semifinal spot as the leader of Group A. Arunima beat NIMS 1-0 and drew with Times Academy to qualify for the semifinal as Group B winner. With 2-0 win over Times, NIMS also qualified for the semifinal as Group B runner-up.



Manaslu starts with win


KATHMANDU: Host Manaslu National College A started the Second Manaslu Inter College Open Boys´ Volleyball Tournament with win on Saturday. Along with the host, defending champion, Newton, Oxford and Classic College also registered wins.



NECOS chess takes new turn

KATHMANDU: The title race for the NECOS All Nepal Fide Rating Chess Tournament took an interesting turn on Saturday as five players finished on top with eight points each by the end of the 10th round to make the title race wide open. With just one round remaining, Ganesh Man Duwal gave up overnight´s sole lead after failing to earn points on Saturday and now remains joint top along with FIDE Master Manish Hamal, Niraj Niraula, Naveen Tandukar and Rajan Puri.



Niraula and Hamal will meet in the last round while Puri faces Tandukar and Duwal competes with Surbir Lama. Suman Lama, Surbir Lama, Bishow Bijay Ghimire and Prem Krishna Maharjan are in the second position with 7.5 points each.


Motiram enters semis

BIRATNAGAR: Motiram Sporting Club on Saturday entered into the semifinal of Madan Memorial Knockout Football Tournament under way in Biratnagar, Morang. Motiram defeated Saino Football Club 3-0 with all three goals from Santosh Chaudhary.



The man-of-the-match declared Chaudhary opened the scoring in the first half and hit the target twice in the second half. Samrat Sporting Club will play against Munal Club on Sunday.


Khumaltar, Gupteshwar into quarters

KATHMANDU: Khumaltar Yuva Club and Gupteshwar Eakta Yuva Club on Saturday advanced into quarterfinal of Sunakothi Cup Open Lalitpur District-wide Football Tournament being held in the capital. Khumaltar defeated Champapur Club 2-0. Niresh Duwal netted both the goals for Khumaltar.



Gupteshwar edged past Naghdaha Yuva Club 2-1. Sunil Basnet gave early lead to Gupteshwar But Naghdaha equalized the match in the middle of the the first half through Paras Giri. But Gupteshwar again restored the lead in the second half through Raju Budathoki.
