SPORTS BRIEFS: TIA sets up final clash with Teresa

KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Trungram International Academy (TIA) set up a final clash with Teresa Academy in senior girls´ section of the Second Deneb Valley-wide Inter School Basketball Tournament.



TIA defeated Galaxy 25-14 in the semifinal on Wednesday while Teresa edged past HEMS 32-20. Likewise, Odyssey and Teresa reached the final of junior boys´ section. Odyssey struggled to pull off a 35-31 victory over host Deneb. [break]



Teresa thrashed Gyan Niketan 45-6 as Bishnu Gautam scored 15 points for the winning side. The final matches will be played on Thursday.


Birgunj beats Sankata 3-1

KATHMANDU: Birgunj Youth Academy continued its unbeaten run in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division League as it defeated Sankata Club 3-1 on Wednesday. This was the fifth win of Birgunj from eight matches. Nishan Nepali opened the score in the injury time of the first half and added another in the 70th minute for Birgunj. Four minutes later, Krishna Karki made it 3-0 but a goal from Ritesh Khadka made the final score 3-1. Birgunj has 18 points from eight matches and the second position in the league.



Star Club, which has played a match more than Birgunj, is on the top of the league table with 19 points. In the second match of the day at the Nepal Police Training Center, Maharajgunj, Kathmandu Club defeated Mahabir Club 3-1. Sajan Pradhan scored a brace for Kathmandu Club. He scored in the 25th and 60th minute of the match. Saroj Sipai scored in the 80th minute for the Kathmandu Club. Tarjan Thapa has scored a goal for Mahabir in the injury time of the first half. Kathmandu Club has 14 points from 10 matches and seventh position in the points table. Mahabir has three points from nine matches and remains at the bottom of the table.



Semifinal fixtures of Sachhindra Memorial Basketball

KATHMANDU: The semifinal fixture of the First Sachindra Memorial Open Men´s Basketball Tournament completed on Wednesday. Morgan will face NASA in the first semifinal while Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) G´sters faces Premier in another semifinal. In the last league matches of the tournament played on NCC court, NASA, Morgan and NCC G´sters registered wins. In the first league match of Group A, NASA defeated Premier 70-62. NASA dominated the first three quarters as it scored 20-18, 28-15, 18-12.



Premier registered 17-4 victory in the last quarter. Robin Khatri was the highest scorer of the match with 20 points. Despite the loss Premier is qualified for the knockout stage as runner-up. In another match of Group B, Morgan routed Bhani Mandal 89-40. Morgan dominated all the quarters scoring 23-9, 12-7, 28-16, 26-8 for the win. Saurav Shrestha scored 20 points for the winning team. In the last league match of Group B, NCC G´sters thrashed Bajra Academy 99-36. NCC G´sters scored 20-5, 25-8, 19-10, 35-14 in all the quarters. Bijay Khatri scored 23 points for the winning team.



COAS Trophy concludes

KATHMANDU: The COAS Championship Trophy of the Nepal Army concluded on Wednesday with the Eastern-Division Headquarters defeating the Mid-Division Headquarters 2-1 in the final match of football held at the Army Headquarters, Bhadrakali. Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Chhatraman Singh Gurung gave away football´s running shield and Rs 25,000 to the winning team while the runner-up received Rs 15,000. Likewise, the Special Force, which finished third, received Rs 10,000.



The COAS also awarded medals to the winners of athletics. The inter-division sports competition of the Nepal Army, which kicked off on September 18, included competitions in six different categories -- athletics, football, basketball, volleyball, taekwondo and boxing. The winning team, which will receive the COAS Trophy, will be announced on the Army Day on February 20.


Host starts campaign on winning note


BANEPA: The ´A´ team of host Police School on Wednesday got off to a winning start in the IGP Football Running Trophy organized by Nepal Police Higher Secondary School at Sanga, Kavre. Police School saw off Shangrila Public School, Kathmandu 2-0. Bikranta Rana and Anil Thapa scored one goal apiece for the winning team. Thapa was adjudged the man-of-the-match.



In another match of the group stage, Baylor International Academy of Banepa played a goalless draw against Emmanuel School of Dhulikhel. Altogether 20 schools are competing in the event. Earlier, President of Nepal Police Higher Secondary School AIGP Prakash Kunwar inaugurated the tournament.
