SPORTS BRIEFS: APF extends lead in volleyball league

KATHMANDU, Dec 11: League leader APF Club extended its lead at the top of the points table on Tuesday after second-placed Nepal Police Club´s match against New Diamond Academy was postponed due to bad light during their Eighth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women´s Double League Volley Tournament, which is being held at New Bus Park, Balaju.



APF leads the points table with 38 points following its straight sets win over Kavre District Volleyball Association. APF cruised to victory scoring 25-10, 25-6, 25-11 to stay five points clear ahead of Police, which was struggling 2-0 down when bad light stopped the game. [break]



According to the organizer Dhorpatan Volleyball Training Center, the match will held from the beginning on Wednesday. In another match, Angel´s Heart defeated Chandeshwari Youth Clun 25-23, 15-14, 23-25, 25-21.



NIMS off to winning start



KATHMANDU
: The girls´ team of host Niten Memorial School (NIMS) got off to winning start in the Fourth Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Championship on Tuesday at its home court in Tokha. NIMS edged past Pennwood 11-10 in their opening match as Srijana Khadka topscored five points for the winning team. In another match, Shanti Sunuwar of Oasis scored 10 points to defeat Deep Jyoti 14-10. In the boys´ section, Pennwood, Daffodil and Oasis won their respective matches.



Gurung elected president



KATHMANDU
: The first general assembly of Nepal Nihon Shotokan Karate Do Association on Tuesday unanimously elected a 21-member central committee headed by Ishwar Babadur Gurung. Mohan Kumar Karki, Yugal Mukhiya, Bhuvan Lal Shrestha and Janardan KC were elected as vice presidents. The general secretary of the newly elected committee is Bhimsen KC while Sanjay Lama is the deputy general secretary. Ramesh Shakya was elected to the post of the treasurer and Abhaya Moktan was elected as the secretary.



Karate team heading for Malaysia Wednesday



KATHMANDU
: A nine-member karate team, including six players, is heading for Malaysia on Wednesday to compete in the KOI Open Karate Championship to be held in Kuala Lumpur from December 14-16. Malika Thapa, bronze medalist of the KOI 20th World Cup, is representing Nepal in the senior women´s 50 kg category while the other Nepali players in the team are Anupama Magar (55 kg), Niru Rana Magar (61 kg) and Kabita Poudel (junior women´s section). The three women will also feature in team kumite, according to a press release issued by Balaju Karate-Do Academy, Nepal. In the men´s section, Diwash Shrestha (67 kg) is representing Nepal in the senior category while Rajkumar Rasaili is in the junior section. Referees Dhruba Bikram Malla, Balaram Mitra and journalist Shyam Chitrakar are the other members of the team.
