KATHMANDU, Dec 11: Amid concerns over the quality of drinking water supplied in the Kathmandu Valley, the Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday ordered the Kathmandu Upatyaka Khanepani Limited (KUKL) to set up a mechanism to ensure supply of safe drinking water.

Responding to a writ petition filed by advocate Sudarshan Thapaliya at the apex court some four years ago, a joint bench of justices Kalyan Kumar Shrestha and Prakash Wasti said KUKL must ensure supply of safe drinking water to consumers. [break]

Accusing the KUKL of supplying contaminated drinking water, Thapaliya had filed a writ petition on August 28, 2008. The petitioner had claimed that coli forms, among other inedible stuffs, were found in the water supplied by KUKL.

The petitioner had sought the apex court order to ensure that KUKL supplied safe drinking water as per the standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Earlier, a study of Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) had also found drinking water supplied by KUKL highly contaminated.

The state owned KUKL supplies about 100 million liters water against the demand of 330 million liters per day in the capital.
