KATHMANDU, Feb 7: Schools across the country remained closed on Sunday, the first day of a three-day educational strike called by Nepal Relief Quota Teachers´ Central Struggle Committee.

"We were obliged to call the strike, as the government did not pay any heed to our demands despite repeated agitations," said committee´s media coordinator Manoj Acharya.

Meanwhile, police briefly arrested around 300 relief quota teachers while they were staging a sit-in in front of the Education Ministry. They staged the sit-in from 9am to 1 pm.

Addressing the sit-in, leaders of the relief teachers´ struggle committee warned of strong protests if their demands were not met.

The relief quota teachers are demanding permanent appointment for all teachers appointed in relief quotas.
