CHITWAN, Sept 2: CPN-UML affiliated youth wings have warned of protests if the government renews the lease contract of hotels operating inside the Chitwan National Park (CNP).

“Those in power misused park resources in the past and the same people now want to continue their clout over the resources without paying taxes,” said Hira Bahadur KC, deputy chairman of UML-affiliated Youth Association.[break]

Currently there are seven hotels operating inside the park. Conservationists have been exerting pressure on the government not to renew the lease contract of the CNP hotels. However, hoteliers have been demanding that their licenses be renewed. The lease contract of the hotels had been extended till July 2012. “More than 90 hotels are operating outside the park. So I do not think that the absence of hotels inside the park would hit tourism in any way,” added KC.
