BIRATNAGAR, July 11: The Regional Office of Standard and Metrology, Biratnagar has taken action against nine factories in Jhapa and Ilam for using unregistered weighing machines.

This has barred Kanchanjungha Cement, Mechi Valley Tea Factory, Siddhi Binayak Tea Industry, Ganesh Himal Tea Estate, Nepal Green and Specialty Tea, Tri-shakti Cheese Factoiry, Binayak Dairy, Panchamrit Dairy and Lucky Dairy from carrying out sales activities. [break]

These industries were found using unregistered weighing machines during surprise inspection conducted by the office last Saturday and Sunday.

“We have asked them to be present at the office and submit a written explanation within seven days,” Sashi Bhushan Yadav, chief of the regional office, said. He warned to take further action against the industries if they fail to submit satisfactory explanations.

Yadav told Republica that it is illegal to use unregistered weighing machines as this gives leeway to industries to dupe customers. As per the Consumer Protection Act such industries can be dragged to the court for such offence.

Although the industries have acknowledged use of unregistered weighing machines, they have said the weighing machines were not tampered.
