KATHMANDU, May 10: In an effort to keep their neighborhood clean, the locals of Naya Naikap VDC of Kathmandu have launched a campaign to sweep the streets regularly.

As part of their campaign, some 40 local residents of Naya Naikap come out of their houses every Saturday morning with brooms and dust pans in their hands and sweep the local streets. They clean all the streets by dividing themselves in different groups. [break]

Naya Naikap is situated near Kalanki and serves as the main gateway to Kathmandu from Thankot. The residents embarked on a cleaning campaign and have been planting green plants to make the gateway a pleasant place for all those entering the city.

The members of the cleaning club, practically, all residents of Naya Naikap, have been actively involved with raising money for the campaign, while the Village Development Committee has helped by printing cards to make every household a participant in this noble cause.

The weekly event is coordinated by Min Shahi, a resident of Naya Naikap area, along with Barbara Kozel, a German national visiting Nepal. This cleaning drive will continue for another year and will serve as an example to residents of other areas within the city.
