Accident victims' kin to get compensation

DHANGADI, Feb 11: The East West Highway that was obstrcucted at Lalpur in Shreepur VDC-4 of Kailali district since Wednesday was opened after Thursday noon following an agreement to provide Rs 525,000 compensation to families of each of the six victims.



District Police Office Kailali said the truck owner agreed to pay compensations to the bereaved families as expenses for funeral rites. The six persons sitting at a roadside teashop were crushed to death when a truck (Se 1 Kha 632) fell over them at Lalpur at 4 pm on Wednesday. [break]



All six deceased, including the teashop owner, were from Kolikatantol.



The protesting families had obstructed the highway lining up the six dead bodies in the road and the whole Kolikantol had spent the night mourning the deaths. The villagers took away the bodies for cremation after the agreement was reached.



The deceased are 70-year-old Karvir Khadka, 75-year-old Raj Bahadur Air, 50-year-old Sher Bahadur Parki, 60-year-old Hari Jora, 65-year-old Dhaule Dholi of Shreepur-4, and 60-year-old Saluwa Thapa of Shreepur-1.



The six had succumbed to death before they could be rescued.



Two persons sitting on the other side were able to escape while 5-year-old Amar Ail was rescued from under the truck. The truck carrying flour for Karnali region was heading east from Attariya.
