KATHMANDU, Sept 7: The participation of Nepali wushu players in the World Championships next month hangs in balance as financial constraints are supposed to water down their plans for the event.

Although Nepal Wushu Association (NWA) has shortlisted the names of the players to feature in the championships to be held in Turkey from October 8-15, not all may get a chance to participate in the grand event.[break]

According to Pranil Dhwaj Karki, chief coach of wushu, the technical committee of NWA has shortlisted the names of wushu players but the final list will be announced on Tuesday.

Eight players have been selected so far based on the results of the First National Inter Quan Wushu Championship held in July, according to assistant coach Pancha Man Maharjan.

The selected players are Ang Babu Lama (tai chi quan) and Raju Maharjan (nan quan) in man´s thaulo event while Yubraj Gurung (56 kg), Mangal Prasad Tharu (60 kg), Puroshattam Rijal (65 kg) and Rajiv Maharjan (75 kg) have been selected in men´s sansau. Those selected in women´s sansau are Elina Chaudhary (52 kg) and Jharana Gurung (60 kg).

Assistant coach Maharjan said all those selected are the gold medalists of the quan championship held about two months ago.

“There was a delay in shortlisting the players because the expenses were not finalized,” said Maharjan.

However, he said that the training has been going on regularly.

Maharjan said that National Sports Council (NSC) Member Secretary Yubraj Lama had asked them to forward the names of the players and that the number of participants will depend upon the support from NSC.

“We cannot send all the players so we shortlisted only the players who have ample international experience. They are also the ones with high hopes of winning medals,” he added.

Among the shortlisted players, Raju Maharjan was adjudged the best player during the selection round in the men´s thaulo while Binita Maharjan, the best player in women´s thaulo, was ruled out of the championship because of with injury.

“Binita missed her training due to injury so she is not included in the list,” said the assistant coach.
