About a month after Nepali U-16 team unfortunately lost to India in the semifinal of the First SAFF U-16 Championship on the home ground at Dasharath Stadium, the youth team is gearing up to change their fate during the AFC U-16 group D Qualifeirs to be held at the same venue from September 12-20. The group consists of Lebanon, Syria, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the host Nepal. Republica´s correspondent Prajwal Oli caught up with Coach Sunil Shrestha during the team´s training at the Rajdal Battalion, Lagankhel, and talked about the team´s preparations. Excerpts: [break]

How is the training going on?

The preparation is going on well. Previously, we had focused on physical fitness and currently we are giving more time on tactical and technical aspects.

What difference from SAFF Championship can we see in this tournament?

Our finishing was weaker than other departments during the SAFF. But the finishing has improved to a large extent now. Besides finishing, defense line up and midfield have also bettered their fitness level.

The opponents are different from the teams, which Nepal played during the SAFF. How do you rate them?

For sure, the opponents are tougher than at the SAFF. Besides this, they will also have physical advantages over our side. But if we succeed to live up to our potential, we can expect favorable results.

Have you finalized the team?

Not yet. We will pick the last 23 players from the 25 players undergoing the closed camp training probably by Thursday. Defender Bivek Basnet who featured during SAFF Championship will not be available in the tournament as he has sustained ankle injury and doctors have advised him to rest for six weeks. But we have equally talented players to replace him.

Which opponent do you consider to be the toughest one?

I think all opponents are strong and we will take all of them seriously. But judging on the basis of senior team´s ranking, Saudi Arabia could be the strongest.

How is the mentality of players?

The players are putting in great efforts and are determined to qualify for the next stage. Besides this, they are fit physically as well as mentally.

Do you think we have realistic chances of making through to next stage?

Yes, we can qualify into next stage as one among top two teams. But, the first match to be played against Lebanon will be vital. If we beat them, we will have greater chance of making it. The victory in the first match shall also have psychological pressure on other opponents and will be helpful in boosting the morale of our team.

What is the role of national team coach Graham Roberts in your team?

He is the technical advisor of the team. He is also looking at the team, guiding the boys and helping us in coaching.
