KATHMANDU, Oct 3: The drizzling rain did not dampen the spirits of Nepali Olympians and players who had gathered in front of Dashrath Stadium on Saturday morning to participate in the half an hour walkathon.

The walkathon was organized for the first time in Nepal by the Nepal Olympic Committee (NOC) with the aim of creating awareness among the masses. “The theme of the walkathon was to inform people that half an hour´s walk is required each day for every individual´s fitness,” said NOC executive secretary Sujan Lal Shrestha.

According to Shrestha, Nepal´s first Olympian Ganga Bahadur Thapa (Athletics), Olympian Deepak Bista (Taekwondo) and other well known players like Manita Shahi participated in the walkathon. The rally began from Dashrath Stadium at 7 in the morning, went to Thapathali and ended at Bhadrakali. About 50 players participated in the walkathon according to Olympian Deepak Bista. “The walkathon is not for the players alone but for creating awareness among the people,” Bista added.

The walkathon was initiated by ´Trim And Fitness International Sports Association´ (TAFISA), Macau, since 2003 and is organized worldwide on October 3 every year.
