KATHMANDU, July 5: The central disciplinary commission of the CPN-UML has sought clarification from the party´s dissident group over their involvement in "factional activities" within seven days.

The disciplinary body has said it had to take the move as some UML leaders were in the recent days involved in separate gatherings and decided to run an intra-party faction parallel to the party mechanisms.[break]

A group of dissident UML leaders including party vice-chairman Ashok Rai and leaders Prithivi Subba Gurung, Ram Chandra Jha, Bijaya Subba and Rajendra Shrestha have been boycotting the party´s meetings and formal events demanding that the party leadership be ready to adopt a policy of delineating and naming provinces based on single-ethnic identities.

"The commission´s attention has been drawn toward the fact that some leaders have been making public statements disparaging party´s prestige, and holding separate gatherings parallel to party events and their announcement to form a separate group within the party. These kinds of activities are against party policy," said a statement issued by Amrit Bohara, chief of the disciplinary body.

Bohara said that any UML leader or member can register his/her note of dissent but one must obey the party´s official decision. He described the dissident leaders´ decision to run parallel events objectionable.

Describing the dissident leaders´ recent meetings and decisions as "factional and unwanted activities" and against the party´s stated policy, the commission urged them to stop such activities immediately.

"Also, this meeting seeks clarifications, within seven days, from those leaders and cadres involved in factional and unwanted activities as to under which party statute, rules and decisions they are carrying out such activities," said the statement.

Bohara said there is no point in criticizing the party leadership because the party´s central committee has already addressed the concerns of Madhesi, ethnic and indigenous communities by endorsing a proposal to adopt a policy on state restructuring based on multi-ethnic identity.

Asked what action will be taken if they don´t furnish clarifications within the seven days, Bohara just said, "It will be unpleasant."
