UML calls SC meet for Thursday

KATHMANDU, Feb 17: The ruling CPN-UML has called a meeting of its Standing Committee (SC) for Thursday to discuss the deepening controversy over the power sharing with UCPN (M). The meeting also coincides with a meeting of the standing committee of the UCPN (Maoist).



UML leaders said the cabinet expansion will depend on the outcome of the meeting called amidst widening differences between the factions led by Jhalanath Khanal and KP Oli-Madhav Kumar Nepal over the issue of home ministry. [break]



The Nepal-Oli camp is dead set against giving home ministry portfolio to the Maoists which has delayed expansion of the cabinet.



Meanwhile, a group of CPN-UML leaders from the so-called third front of the party has demanded the party leadership to call a meeting of the party´s politburo to discuss the current conflict in the party.



"We demand the meeting as we are not officially informed about the unfolding situation in the party," said Pradip Nepal, a leader of the front, after a meeting of 12 politburo members. Besides Nepal, Mukunda Neupane, Bedu Ram Bhusal, Mahendra Pandey, Bishnu Rimal, among others, were present in the meeting.



According to Nepal, General Secretary Ishwar Pokharel has assured them of calling a politburo meeting within a week.
