The campaign beginning Sunday would focus on removing the automobile workshops run encroaching the footpaths and roads at various place in the capital, according to the MTPD officials.[break]
According to the MTPD Spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Pawan Giri, a number of garages and workshops operate in various crowded areas of the capital such as Maitighar, Koteshwar, Tripureshwar, Kalimati and Kalanki, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road which causes obstruction in vehicular movement.
The pedestrian movement on roads leads to rise in the cases of hit and run in the Valley, he added.
Before taking strict actions against garages and workshops operators, the MTPD will warn them to shift their shops. The MTPD had given one week, from April 28 to May 4, to remove their shops from footpaths and public land.
The MTPD Spokesperson DSP Giri added that the campaign would be effective only for a week in a first phase and resumed further as per its impact. “We can give the garages owners some more time if they request us,” he added.
However, the workshops would be removed and the equipments and vehicles would be carried to Baggikhana, the traffic police headquarter, if the operators fail to comply with the traffic order. Likewise, the owners may also face public offence charge if they continue to turn deaf ear.
The automobile workshops have been found to dispose engine oils and machinery wastes carelessly on the road which contain harmful chemicals, said the MTPD officer.
