KATHMANDU, June 2: Accusing the Supreme Court (SC) of being indifferent to their demands, trade unions active in courts have launched a protest from Sunday.

They staged a “pen down” for an hour at the apex court, appellate court and district courts across the Kathmandu valley on Sunday. The trade unionists said that they would intensify their protests if their demands are not met immediately. [break]

Leaders of trade unions affiliated to Nepali Congress (NC), UCPN (Maoist) and CPN-UML, among others, have warned of halting regular works in courts across country, if their demands are not addressed by Friday.

The trade unions have floated a 57-point demand. Stating that lack of judges in the courts has affected justice delivery, the trade unions have demanded that all the vacant positions for judges in these courts be filled without delay.

The trade unions have demanded a unified act on perks and facilities for judges and other employees of the courts and end discrimination.

The trade unions active in the courts have also demanded permanent appointment of staffers as per civil service act.

They have also demanded an end to dual facilities enjoyed by high-ranking officials.

Similarly, the trade unions have also demanded allocation of responsibility by setting Term of References (ToR). They had submitted memorandum to Chief Justice and Chairman of the Interim Election Council Khil Raj Regmi on May 20.
