KATHMANDU, Dec 23: A writ petition was filed on Sunday at the Supreme Court (SC) challenging the government´s recent decision to promote five senior superintendent of police (SSP) to deputy inspector general (DIG).

SSPs Ravi Pratap Rana, Purna Singh Khadka, Manohar Prasad Rimal, Ram Kumar Khanal, Tara Prasad Lamichhane and Gyanod Raj Upadhyaya moved the apex court claiming that the government promoted police officials junior to them.[break]

A cabinet meeting held on Wednesday had promoted SSPs Shyam Bahadur Khadka, Navraj Silwal, Praksh Aryal, Jaya Bahadur Chand and Bam Bahadur Bhandari to the post of DIGs.

The petitioners have claimed that except Khadka other officers are junior to them. Stating that the government´s decision was against the Interim Constitution and the police regulations, the petitioners have urged the SC to scrap the decision. The Prime Minister´s Office, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Police Headquarters, among others, have been made defendants in the writ.
