Sports stars express solidarity to quake victims

KATHMANDU, May 1: International sport stars have expressed solidarity with Nepal and with Nepalis following the devastating earthquake on Saturday that killed thousands in people across the country. Some of them have mourned the dead while others have been involved in fund raising activities.

Philippines' world champion Manny Pacquiao, WBC and WBA welterweight champion, through video message, has urged Nepalis not to live in fear of the earthquake and that the world was with in solidarity with the people of Nepal.His video message posted on Twitter states "Do not be terrified, do not be discouraged. You are not alone Nepal, my family and I pray for your safety and deliverance. God bless you all."

Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather are set to fight on Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The much anticipated fight is considered to be the most expensive in the history of the sport.

Christiano Ronaldo, the skipper of Portugal national football team and star forward of Spanish football team Real Madrid has asked for people to support children affected by the earthquake. He has asked his followers to help children by donating to Save The Children's relief efforts. He tweeted, "Help the children affected by supporting @SavetheChildren's relief efforts"

Likewise, Spanish Football Club Barcelona and Argentine star footballer Lionel Messi also urged his supporters to help people of Nepal by donating to supportunicef,org.

Meanwhile, in an email received by Republica, Barcelona Foundation run by Spanish giants FC Barcelona, expressed condolences to the victims of the earthquake.

Wayne Rooney, captain of England and Manchester United, urged donations to Unicef UK for the victims.

Similarly, World No 4 Spanish Tennis player Rafael Nadal and Indian Tennis star Sania Mirza have mourned the victim of the incident.

Indian football team's vice-captain Sunil Chhetri, has expressed his support to the country and offered prayers for the victims. He tweeted, "Thoughts and prayers are with Nepal in their moment of grief and loss. May God give them the courage they need. #PrayForNepal hash"
