SPORTS BRIEFS: Three players share lead

KATHMANDU, May 3: FIDE Master Manish Hamal, Niraj Niraula and Prakash Nepal are jointly leading the Salhakar Memorial National Open Chess Tournament after the completion of the third round on Tuesday. All three have collected three points each.



Hamal defeated Umesh Sainju and Rajaram Duwal in the second and third rounds, respectively. Niraula beat Hera Kaji Maharjan and Rajesh Kakshapati while Nepal overcame Gyanendra Maharjan and Madan Krishna Shrestha. [break]



Bikash Kuluju is in the fourth spot with 2.5 points. Hera Kaji Maharjan, Sanjay Maharjan, Ganesh Man Duwal, Umesh Sainju, Madan Krishna Kayastha, Harish Chandra Chaulagain and Krishna Thapa share the fifth position.



Police announces cricket team



Nepal Police Club announced its 14-member squad for the ongoing Pepsi National Cricket Tournament and upcoming Twenty20 Tournament on Tuesday. Police is scheduled to debut in the national cricket from the ongoing tournament.



Former national skipper Binod Das is to captain the police side, which includes Manjeet Shrestha, Mahesh Chhetri, Binod Bhandari, Naresh Budhair and Pradeep Airee. Likewise, Puspa Thapa, Sunny Pun, Rahul BK, Bhuwan Karki, Chandra Saud, Subas Pradhan, Santosh Baral and Faijal Rehman Khan will also play for Police.



According to coach Manoj Katuwal, Police has signed players for the tournaments until the next decision.
