SPORTS BRIEFS: Star Club retains top position

KATHMANDU, Dec 8: Civil Mall Star Club retained top position in the Martyrs Memorial B Division League being held at Nepal Police Academy, Maharjagunjwith a 3-2 win over Kathmandu Club on Thursday.



Bikash Rai hit the decisive goal for Star Club during the fading moments of the match. [break]Star had taken lead in the second minute through Nirmal Dura but Bimal Shrestha hit the equalizer in the 10th minute for Kathmandu Club.



In the dramatic match, Star restored the lead in the 27th minute but against Laxmi Narayan Kunibanjar hit another for Kathmadnu six minutes from time to level the score 2-2. But Rai´s last ditch goal earned Star valuable three points. Star has 16 points from eight matches, while Birgunj which has played one match less is in second place with 15 points. Kathmandu has 11 points.



Earlier, Madhyapur Youth Association and Sano Gaucharan played goalless draw. With the result, Madhyapur has 12 and Sano Gaucharan four points.



Sangam´s hope alive for national league

ITAHARI: Sangam Youth Club of Kaski kept alive its hope of qualifying for the national league on Thursday after it defeated Sainik Youth Club of Jhapa 2-1 in the Super League being held in Duhabi, Sunsari. Bivek Gurung and Rakesh Gurung netted one apiece in Sangam´s victory to inflict second consecutive defeat for Sainik. Tenzing Namgyal of Sangam was declared the man-of-the-match.



Amit Lokmat scored the only goal for Sainik. In another match, Mitramilan Club of Sunsari and Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) of Makawanpur played 1-1 draw. Susan Lama of WMMC was adjudged the man-of-the-match. Both Mitramilan and WMMC have accumulated four points apiece. WMMC tops the group on the basis of goal difference. Sangm with its first victory is in third position while Sainik is yet to open scoring in points table. All the teams have played two matches apiece.



Whitefield in quarters


KATHMANDU: Host Whitefield advanced into the quarterfinals of the Fourth Whitefield Inter-school Boys´ Basketball Tournament on Thursday with a 45-25 win over Holy Garden in the senior category. In another league match, Galaxy defeated Siddhartha Vanasthali 55-41. In the junior category, Neric, Whitefield and The Excelsior won their respective matches.



Gyan Niketan thrashes Galaxy


KATHMANDU: Gyan Niketan thrashed Galaxy 21-2 in the junior boys´ category of the Second Deneb Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Thursday. In other junior boys´ matches, the host Deneb, Odyssey, Teresa, Greenfield, Bal Mandir and Anupam School emerged victorious. In the senior girls´ category, Bal Mandir, KES and Galaxy won their respective matches.



St Xavier´s, NAPF to vie for title


KATHMANDU: Host St Xavier´s, Godavari and NAPF set up a final showdown in the 16th National Friar Moran Memorial Football Tournament after winning their respective matches on Thursday. A brace from Rajkumar Tamang helped St Xavier´s defeat Pushpanjali 2-1. Meanwhile, Birendra Budha scored the lone goal for NAPF to sink defending champion Little Angels´ 1-0 in another semifinal.



Gyan Shikha, Gyanodaya in final


KATHMANDU: Gyan Shikha set up a title clash with the host Gyanodaya in boys´ football of the Eicher Gyan Carnival on Thursday. Ganesh Gurung scored a hat-trick as Gyan Shikha saw off St Xavier´s, Godavari 3-0 to advance into the final, while Gyanodaya thrashed IJ Pioneer 4-0 in the other semifinal.



Mt Glory, Odyssey enter semis


KATHMANDU: Mount Glory, Odyssey, Greenland and Babylon won their respective matches on Thursday to advance into the semifinals of the Second Tenda AIA Inter-school Basketball Tournament in the junior boys´ category. In the senior girls´ category, Gyanodaya, Teresa, TIA and Galaxy made it through to the last four.



DKSF Masters next week


KATHMANDU: Dr Khagendra Sports Foundation is all set to organize the First DKSF Masters Open Athletics Meet in coordination with Nepal Amateur Athletics Association on December 17. The event, which will be held at the Dasharath Stadium, will have competitions in 30 different categories in five age groups, including school-level group.
