SPORTS BRIEFS: Shuvatara, Galaxy into QF

KATHMANDU, Sept 4: Shuvatara and Galaxy advanced into the quarterfinals of the ongoing Yuva Cup Basketball Tournament on Sunday as the winners of their respective groups.



Shuvatara defeated Gyan Niketan 41-21 with 21 points from Rasish Bista.[break]



In another match, Galaxy beat Neric Academy 32-24 as Prince Kumar Singh scored 10 points. The losing sides of both the matches -- Gyan Niketan and Neric -- also qualified for the quarterfinals as the group runners-up. All the matches are played at the court of Gyan Niketan.



Wins for Morgan, Bernhardt
KATHMANDU: Morgan and Bernhardt College registered wins under the girls´ section of the Second Bagmati Inter-college Basketball Tournament on Sunday. In the matches played at the court of host Bagmati College, Morgan thrashed Brihaspati Vidya Sadan 24-8 riding on 12 points from Samichhin Bista. Bernhardt registered a 19-15 victory over United Academy. Sabina Magar of Bernhardt was the highest scorer with eight points. In the boys´ section, Lumbini beat the host Bagmati 38-19, Nobel routed VS Niketan 38-15, Pentagon overcame Brihaspati 49-37, Xavier International thrashed Shivapuri School 33-8 and Bridgewater edged past Kathmandu Valley 47-44.


Host LRI, Mount Glory triumph
KATHMANDU: Host LRI Korfball Club and Mount Glory Club emerged victorious on Sunday during the inaugural day of First National Korfball Championship being held at LRI School, Kalanki. In the opening match, LRI Club edged past Aramhba Kapan Youth Club 6-2. Similarly, in another match, Mount Glory Club beat Kumarigal Scout Open Unit 6-3. Earlier, internationally recognized Nepal Olympic Committee General Secretary Jeevanram Shrestha inaugurated the event being organized by LRI Korfball Club. Altogether 12 teams are participating in the three-day event.



Financial assistance to boxer´s family
KATHMANDU: National Sports Council (NSC) on Sunday handed over Rs 470,000 to the family of boxer Raju Budhamagar who died during a boxing tournament held in Hetauda on January 5. NSC Member Secretary Yuvaraj Lama handed over the cheque to Budhamagar´s father amidst a function. Earlier, the NSC had agreed to provide financial assistance of Rs 1 million to Budhamagar´s family during the tenure of former member secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary. Earlier, Kathmandu Metropolitan City had provided Rs 250,000, Nepal Boxing Association and the local host of the tournament had provided Rs 100,000 each and Nepal National and International Players Association had provided Rs 50,000 to Budhamagar´s family. NSC had earlier given Rs 30,000 to the boxer´s family.



Jyapu chess kicks off
KATHMANDU: FIDE Master Manish Hamal, Nepal Champion Badrilal Nepali, former Nepal champions Surbir Lama and Navin Tandukar started the Jyapu Cup Open national FIDE Rating Chess Tournament on a winning note on Sunday. Along with these top seeded players, Rajan Puri, Purushottam Chaulagain, Rabindra Shakya, Purna Raj Khadka, Man Kumar Gurung, Deepak Maharjan, Ramesh Bhandari, Milan Rokka, Ganesh Man Duwal, Umesh Saiju, Bikash Kuluju, Suryasan Prajapati and Prem Lal Maharjan also registered win in the first round. The tournament to be held until round 10 in Swiss League format features 74 players from 20 districts. Gyanendra Khaiju is the chief arbiter of the tournament. The winner of the tournament will receive Rs 15,000 while the runner-up and the third position holder will purse Rs 10,000 and 7,000 respectively.


Birgunj, Tushal win
KATHMANDU: Birgunj Youth Academy and Tushal Youth won their respective matches on Sunday with identical 1-0 scores in the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Division Football League. Birgunj defeated Boys Union Club with a lone goal from Chaturdhan Chaudhary during the match played at ANFA ground, Satdobato. Chudhary scored the all important goal in 78th minute for Birgunj. Similarly in another match, Tusal beat Samajik Youth Club 1-0. Shyam Babu scored the decider for Tusal in the 23rd minutes.
