SPORTS BRIEFS: Second win for WMMC

KATHMANDU, Nov 23: Workers Martyrs Memorial Club (WMMC) of Makawanpur boosted its chances of entering the super league with its second consecutive victory in the Regional A Division League on Wednesday.



WMMC came from behind to beat Sangam Yuva Club of Kaski 2-1 in a Group B match with a brace from Mandip Singh Basnet. Prabin Rana had given Sangam the lead in the 17th minute, but Basnet leveled the scores three minutes later and hit the winner in the 59th minute.[break]



Jayakishan Sports Club of Banke beat Bijay Sports Club 2-1. Bibhushan KC scored the decider in the 69th minute to seal the win for Jayakishan.



Earlier, Yogendra Gurung of Jayakishan had opened the scoring in the 60th minute and Maniram Chaudhary had hit back the equalizer for Bijay Sports in the 65th minute.



WMMC occupies the top spot with six points from two wins, while Jayakishan is behind on the basis of goal difference despite having equal points.



Maharjan wins 5-km open race


KATHMANDU: Dinesh Maharjan won the 5-km open men´s race in the first Lalitpur District Sports Festival on Wednesday. Maharjan completed the race in 19:46:02 minutes ahead of Ram Krishna Maharjan and Mahendra Bajracharya. In the women´s 3-km race, Sangita Tiwari clocked 14:15:03 minutes to clinch the title. Maya Lama finished second while Prakriti Sharma finished third. In the school girls´ 3-km race, Srijana Khadka, Sanjori Joshi and Prarthana Basnet secured the top three positions respectively.



In the boys´ 5-km race, Susan Shrestha, Karan Gurung and Safal Garbuja finished first, second and third respectively. Meanwhile, in karate, Susmita Kapali and Mahesh Ale Magar emerged winners in the 20 kg weight category of girls´ and boys´ sections, respectively. Nikesh Maharjan won gold in boys´ 45 kg weight category. Sabina Magar and Mahima Pandey registered victories in girls´ 25 kg and 35 kg weight categories.



Teresa, Mount Glory lift titles


KATHMANDU: Teresa and Mount Glory on Wednesday won the title of the Fourth Odyssey Inter School Basketball Tournament in the girls´ and boys´ category respectively. In the senior girls´ 3x3, Teresa beat Galaxy 9-6. Sarita Thapa scored four points for the winning team. In the junior boys´ category, Mount Glory defeated AIA 32-21 with 12 points from Dipesh Lama. Shish Lo was adjudged the best player of the tournament in the boys´ section while Sarita Thapa received the award for the best player in the girls´ category. Angels´ Heart finished third in both girls´ and boys´ categories.



NIMS, Reliance triumph


KATHMANDU: The host NIMS A, Reliance and The Excelsior registered wins in the Third Jiten Thakuri Memorial Inter-school Basketball Tournament on Wednesday in the boys´ category. Seventeen points from Bijay Lama guided the host team to a 43-30 win over Daffodil. Reliance beat NIMS B 34-23 with 24 points from Amrit Chaulagain. Meanwhile, The Excelsior registered a narrow margin 31-30 victory over Bagmati.



Tsiring Namgel scored 10 points for the winning team. In the girls´ section, NIMS, Ganesh School and Daffodil were victorious. NIMS beat Brihaspati Vidyasadan 32-15 on its home court. Bina Nakarmi was the highest scorer with 10 points. Ganesh overcame The Celebration 37-22 and Daffodil thrashed Deep Jyoti 17-6.


Nepal get final nod for Challenge Cup

KATHMANDU: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has given the final decision in favor of Nepal to host the final round of AFC Challenge Cup 2012. The meeting of the AFC executive committee held on Monday finally re-approved its old decision to let Nepal host the cup.



The event will be held from March 3to 18 in the capital. This is the greatest international football being hosted by Nepal.



A two member team from AFC had arrived Nepal to investigate the preparation for the Challenge Cup a couple of weeks earlier. The investigation team had pointed out the need of more improvement though it was satisfied with the preparation.



Nepal claim for hosting the event got final approval on the basis of report prepared by the investigation team, All Nepal Football Association (ANFA) vice president Lalit Krishna Shrestha quoted President Ganesh Thapa who attended the AFC meeting.



The AFC team had inspected two proposed ground -- Dasharath Stadium and Halchowk ground for hosting the event and St Xaviers ground, Buddhi Bikash ground, Chyasal ground and ANFA ground for practice. The officials of the AFC had suggested the ANFA for mix zone to facilitate media-persons.



Along with Nepal, Palestine and Bangladesh had also presented bid for hosting the event. But Nepal got the conditional chance to host after voting of the tournament organizing committee. Nepal was set the condition to upgrade physical infrastructure.



ANFA President Ganesh Thapa is also the president of Challenge Cup organizing committee.



The Challenge Cup will be participated by India, Palestine, Philippines, Turkmenistan, Maldives, Tajikistan and North Korea.



Star climbs to third


KATHMANDU: Star Club on Wednesday defeated Laligurans Pulchowk Sports Club 2-0 during the Martyrs Memorial Red Bull B Divison Football League being at the Nepal Police Academy, Maharajgunj. With the win Star climbed on the third position with seven points from four matches. Despite equal points Sankata occupies second spot on the basis of goal difference and Madhyapur Youth Association leads the table with nine points. Pulchowk has five points from four matches.



Bikash Rai and Nirmal Dura netted one goal apiece in the 22nd and 54th minute respectively. Boys Sports Club and Birgunj Youth played 1-1 stalemate in another match. Sandip Rai had given 63rd minute lead to Boys Sports but Nishan Nepali cancelled the lead two minutes later. Birgunj has now six points and Boys Sports two points.



Bajracharya leads chess


KATHMANDU: Sudip Bajracharya from Lalitpur leads First Amateur Chess Tournament after the end of third round of the tournament on Wednesday. Bajracharya has three points from three rounds. Bajracharya beat Bhim Datt Pandey in the second round and registered win against Umesh Sainju in the third round.



With similar three points Dharma Bahadur Lama, Sajin Maharjan and Bikash Kuluju are in the second, third and fourth position with less progressive point. with 2.5 points each Shyam Sundar Shrestha and Subash Kumar Gurung are in the fifth and sixth position. The tournament is being played in Swiss league nine round format.
