SPORTS BRIEFS: Prime, Trinity into quarters

KATHMANDU, Nov 15: The boys´ teams of host Prime College and Trinity College entered the quarterfinals of the ongoing Ninth Prime Cup Basketball Championship as the winners of Group A and B respectively on Tuesday. Bishal Tamang´s 12 points guided Prime to a 56-36 victory over Rosebud on its home court at Naya Bazaar.



Xavier International also qualified for the next round as Group A runner-up. In Group B, Trinity defeated Caribbean 51-31. Krishna Man Maharjan was the highest scorer with 19 points.[break]



Golden Gate qualified for the last eight as the group runner-up. In the girls´ category, defending champion Prime qualified for the semifinals with a 39-11 victory over Reliance in Group A.



Nayana Shakya and Luniva Singh were the highest scorers with eight points each. Premier also qualified for the next round from the same group as the runner-up. In the last match of the day, 17 points from Maya Syangten helped Reliance edge past Golden Gate 35-32.


Maharjan duo advance


KATHMANDU: Babu Ratna Maharjan and Rajendra Maharjan’s pair on Tuesday defeated Raju Dangol and Rajesh Maharjan’s pair 21-16, 21-17 during the preliminary rounds of the Yala Cup Badminton Tournament being held in the capital. Likewise, Amir Shakya teamed up with Dibya to beat the pair of Rajendra Maharjan and Mahesh Maharjan 21-14, 21-15, Bir Maharjan and Binod Maharjan’s pair overcame Bhibhushan Tamrakar and Yaman Tamrakar’s team 21-19, 20-22, 21-14.



In other matches, Mahesh Bajracharya and Shanta Ram Bajracharya’s pair, Ganga Maharjan and Dipan Maharjan’s pair, Ratna Kumar Bajracharya and Pradeep Shakya’s pair, Raj Bhai Maharjan and Aman Maharjan’s pair, Sanil Shakya and Sunil Shakya’s pair, Kapil K Shahi and Kamal Raj Karnikar’s pair and Anil Bajracharya and Manish Bajracharya’s pair also emerged victorious.



Shrestha elected president


KATHMANDU: The general assembly of Nepal China Sports Friendship Society held on Monday elected a 21-member executive committee under the presidency of Jeevan Ram Shrestha. Ganga Bahadur Thapa Magar is the vice president while Umesh Shrestha and Chaturananda Baidhya have been elected general secretary and secretary, respectively. Keshav Rayamajhi has been elected the treasurer.



Lilamani Paudel and Suman Shrestha are the advisors of the committee. The president of Nepal Olympic Committee and Member Secretary of the National Sports Council are selected as the honorary advisors. The members of the committee Lama Tendi Sherpa have been elected in sports committee, Keshav Rayamajhi in the media committee and Bhimsen Rajbhak has been elected in media committee. Earlier, Yan Houlan, the Chinese ambassador to Nepal inaugurated the general assembly.


Nepal blue beats Nepal Red


KATHMANDU: Nepal Blue registered 28 runs victory over Nepal Red on Tuesday during the practice match prior to the ACC Twenty 20 Cricket Tournament. In the match played at TU Cricket Ground, Nepal Blue opted to bat first and scored 116 runs losing nine wickets. Anil Mandal was the highest scorer with 39 runs off 38 balls. Basanta Regmi grabbed three wicket for Nepal Red.



Chasing the total of 117 runs, Nepal Red could only manage to score 88 runs for the fall of eight wickets. Subash Khakurel scored 23 runs for the losing side. Rahul BK grabbed three wickets off four overs conceding 12 runs. The ACC Twenty 20 Cricket Tournament will be held December 3-11 in Kathmandu.
