Sagarmatha Day being marked today

This day is marked on May 29 every year to commemorate the first ascent to Mt. Sagarmatha by New Zealand's Edmund Hilary and Nepal's Tenzing Norge Sherpa.

KATHMANDU, May 29: The International Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) Day is being celebrated today with different programmes.



This day is marked on May 29 every year to commemorate the first ascent to Mt. Sagarmatha by New Zealand's Edmund Hilary and Nepal's Tenzing Norge Sherpa. The world's tallest peak is a symbol of Nepal's national pride, tourism development and international identity.

Different government organizations, tourism entrepreneurs, mountaineering agencies and local levels have organized programmes on mountain tourism, safe tourism, environment conservation and related issues.


The stakeholders have called for providing top priority to conservation measures of mountains as the impacts of climate change have been visible in recent years. 


For Nepal, mountain tourism is a major basis for the economy, employment generation and foreign exchange income.
