SPORTS BRIEFS: Players welfare fund launched

KATHMANDU, April 22: National Sports Council (NSC) on Sunday officially launched the Players Welfare Fund. Minister for Youth and Sports Kamala Roka handed Rs 1 million on behalf of NSC to the fund.



The fund already had Rs 11 million and Rs 596,387 was collected in the opening day from different sports associations, players, coaches and individuals.[break]



Meanwhile, NSC, at the same function, introduced different types of identity cards for players, including platinum, gold and silver. Minsiter Roka also distributed platinum identity cards to athletes Baikuntha Manandhar, Jeet Bahadur KC, Sangina Baidhya, Deepak Bista, Deepak Shrestha and Deepak Maharjan.



Addressing the function, Minister Roka informed that the fund will be vital in motivating players and should be used only for helping the needy players. NSC Member secretary Yuvraj Lama assured that the fund shall be used only for the benefit of needy players with poor financial background.


Golden Gate through to semis

KATHMANDU: Golden Gate International College advanced into the semifinals of girls´ section in the KCM Basketball Bash on Sunday. Golden Gate thrashed St Xavier´s 47-12 in a league match of Group B to enter the last four. Neha Chaudhary scored 17 points for the winning side. In the boys´ section, K and K College defeated St Xavier´s 40-30 in a group stage match held at the court of the host, Kathmandu College of Management, at Gwarko. Likewise, NASA routed CAB 107-17 as Robin Khatri scored 29 points.
